Now, we’ve seen some pretty interesting creations over the years in the sport of drag racing that have bordered on the edge of being functional but certainly cool as heck in their own right. Many of them date back to the formative years of the sport when anyone would try something new to get an edge, and others, though few and far between, have done more in recent years. From rear-engined Funny Cars, to dragsters with the cockpit behind the front wheels, to the once-crazy concept of a rear-engine dragster.
But this…well, we don’t really know what to call it…pretty well takes the cake. It’s part fuel altered, part doorslammer, part dragster, and 100-percent badass in ever sense of the word.
This thing (which we’ll refer to it as because we’re not sure if it’s technically a car or a van) is the creation of renowned European custom fabricator Wayne Allman and his Intergalactic Custom Shop. Allman has been responsible for numerous wild vehicles over the years, and has played an integral role in the build of European drag radial standout Andy Frost’s new Pro Modified Vauxhall.
Allman’s ride, aptly named “Mental Breakdown,” is something of a shortened Top Fuelchassis, with a Funny Car/Fuel Altered-like cockpit hanging over the front wheels. It’s wrapped in roughly half of a Volkswagen “hippie van” with what appears to be functional doors and sporting a really sharp, nostalgic paint scheme. Out back is a supercharged Hemi, similar to what might be found in a Top Alcohol Dragster.
Allman took the car to the track earlier this year, but engine woes kept him from making a pass, but this is one we absolutely MUST see in action. Innovators like Wayne are sadly missed these days.
