Nostalgia Funny Cars are a handful to drive and that’s what has endeared them to fans for decades…you really never know what one of these fabulous floppers will do. Masterton Motorplex International Dragstrip in New Zealand played host to the Auckland Invasion where a healthy contingent of nostalgia floppers came out to play — and a couple of the drivers played just a little too hard.
The Auckland Invasion is a big event on the drag racing scene in New Zealand, so there’s always plenty of cars for fans to check out, and every racer shows up locked and loaded to put on a good show. Brendan Seyb and Simon Fowke brought their Funny Cars to the event so they could get some good runs in, bit little did they know they would become stars of the show for the wrong reasons.
Pete’s Deep End Drags was at the top end of the track and caught all of the insanity that occurred during this run. Right off the bat, Fowke went for a wild ride when his car made a wild right turn just past the christmas tree. Thankfully, Fowke was able to gather the car back in and didn’t make contact with Seyb, but that didn’t mean Seyb was in the free and clear. At the top end of the racetrack, just after Seyb pulled his parachutes his car began to accelerate again whilst fishtailing violently. Thankfully, Seyb was able to regain control of his car, but the extra acceleration led to Seyb’s chutes not slowing the car down enough so he made a quick trip to the beach.
