Fuel Altered racers captured the imaginations of countless drag racing fans in the 1960s through the 1970s thanks to their bravery behind the wheel and the wild antics of their vehicles. These cars were known to be unpredictable, fast, and practically had a mind of their own. The modern version of these machines are essentially nitro Funny Cars without the downforce, so they’re more than a handful to drive.
In their heyday, AA/Fuel Altereds ran in the 200 MPH range, but Richard Hartman changed that at the Texas Motorplex when he ripped off the first 4-second and 300 MPH pass. That run was no surprise considering NHRA ace Tim Wilkerson was tuning the car, and the fact that Richard Hartman is an accomplished driver himself.
There was another AA/Fuel Altered driver on the property that weekend at the Texas Motorplex that was hunting records, and his name was Kebin Kinsley, pilot of the “War Wagon” machine owned by Howard and Shane Farris. Kinsley was the owner of the AA/Fuel Altered eighth-mile record and had made the trip to Funny Car Chaos’ “Nitro Madness” event to take the quarter-mile crown.
This video from Nitro America is badass because it captures all the raw moments of Hartman and Kinsley chasing history. You also hear the cool backstory about what went into setting these records, and see just how much fun these guys had etching their names into the drag racing history books. After watching this video, you’ll understand why if it has AAFA on the wing it’s one bad hot rod.
