Traction Action: Installing CPP’s Street Trac Traction Bars

Horsepower is useless if you can’t harness it and make it stick to the surface of a race track, and that’s why you need to have the right suspension parts. Most classic muscle cars came with a leaf spring-style suspension that works great for regular driving, but it’s far from ideal if you want to go drag racing. In this video, Classic Performance Products (CPP) shows you how to install and adjust its traction bars for a leaf spring suspension.

Wheel hop and axle wrap can be the bane of anyone’s existence who has a car with a leaf spring suspension and is trying to get traction while drag racing. What is wheel hop and axle wrap? Basically, as a vehicle with leaf springs tries to accelerate, the rear end will begin to pull forward and twist violently. All of this force and motion is absorbed by the leaf springs and it causes a loss of traction. Traction bars prevent wheel hop and axle wrap by allowing the leaf spring to work as it should and mitigating all of the unwanted motion.

Now, CPP’s Street Trac Traction Bars for the 1962-74 Nova and 1967-81 Camaro come with everything you need for a complete installation. The CPP traction bars work with virtually any tie plate or shock-mount system, and they use rear brackets that are separate, so they don’t require a vehicle-specific rear traction bar mount.

Jason Scudellari does an outstanding job of walking you through how to install the Street Trac Traction Bar kit, and you can see how everything goes together from start to finish, how to adjust the bars, and there are even a few tech tips mixed in, as well.
