Lizzy Musi, the 21-year old daughter of legendary doorslammer racer and engine builder Pat Musi, went for a ride she won’t soon forget on Friday night during qualifying for the ADRL Spring Drags III at the Bristol Dragway in Tennessee.
The former Junior Dragster racer made her ADRL debut last month in Houston in the Top Sportsman division driving a nitrous oxide-assisted 1968 Camaro capable of covering the eighth-mile race distance in 4.3 seconds.
During the second round of qualifying at the scenic Bristol facility, Musis’ Camaro stepped out of the groove near the finish stripe and took an immediate turn across the racetrack. The position of the race car and its speed caused air to get underneath the rear of the car, lifting it up and over the guardrail as it slid across the top of the barrier and ultimately to a stop in the grass about 3/4-mile down track.
Videographer Grinner Hester, who was perched along the guardrail with his camera mounted on a tripod, captured the entire incident but soon found himself in a precarious situation as Musis’ out-of-control Camaro came over the guardrail right into the position he was occupying. According to reports, Hester dove over the wall onto the track to get away from the race car while his camera took a direct hit. Fortunately, the hit wasn’t enough to destroy this incredible footage stored inside the camera that’s already made the rounds on Yahoo!, USA Today, Fox News, and what’s sure to be countless other major media outlets.
