Kuwait-native Turky “The Scarface” al Zafiri may not be instantly recognizable to stateside doorslammer racing fans, but he absolutely drove the wheels off the ProLine Racing Engines-powered Q80 Race Teams’ Camaro this past weekend. Taking over the wheelman duties from Eric Dillard for the PSCA’s Street Car Super Nationals’ Anarchy at the Arch event, al Zafiri wrangled the rowdy ride to both ends of the Outlaw Pro Modified world record during the scintillating side-by-side final round race against Frankie “Madman” Taylor, clicking off a 5.46 at 272 MPH. Wrap your head around numbers like that coming from a car with two functioning doors!
Blasting into the 5.40’s at over 270 MPH was no easy task for al Zafiri, as the car hardly waltzed straight down the quarter-mile every pass at Gateway Raceway just outside St. Louis. Instead, it demanded the Q80 pilot finesse it back into the groove almost every pass, and he did so with the skill of a seasoned vet and the precision of a surgeon. Of course, without copious amounts of horsepower on tap, provided by the ProLine 481X powerplant and a pair of super-sized Precision Turbochargers, the car would be “just another Pro Mod Camaro”, but with Steve Petty himself handling the tuning duties and the full Q80 support team working their collective butts off all weekend, they were able to leave St. Louis as the baddest of the Pro Mod badasses on the planet. The final round race against Taylor stands as the quickest and fastest side-by-side doorslammer race in history, a testament to the power levels the Q80 car is making, as al Zafiri out-MPH’d Taylor, only a tick off the record himself at 5.47, by a full TEN miles per hour. You can count the number of competitors who can say they have driven around Frankie on one hand — possibly one FINGER.
It remains to be seen just how quick these cars will be able to go, but with them having knocked over two tenths of a second since the fall SCSN race in Las Vegas, it stands to reason it won’t take long before Outlaw Pro Mods are knocking on the 5.20-second threshold. You can be sure that al Zafiri will be among the first to strap in and get after it!
