THIS is one of the craziest, hardest-to-wrap-your-head-around video clips we’ve ever seen! There’s not a whole lot to say, at least before you watch the video, because words cannot adequately describe what you see.
We wish we had more info about the car, the driver or the track, but unfortunately our high school Spanish is mostly a distant memory except for a few common phrases. Lo siento, Mrs. King… No se mucho espanol. What we do know, just by watching the video, is that this badass little Chevette is a handful on the starting line, and when the brakes fail at the finish line, the driver does an absolutely masterful job of bringing this butt-clinching ride to a safe stop.
Between those two events, we see the boosted econobox-turned-drag car blast to a 5.23 through the eighth-mile, at 211 kph (approximately 130 mph), with the driver battling for control most of the way. As he hits the stripe and tosses the laundry, it becomes clear that something is amiss, but the driver immediately falls into “I got this!” mode as he begins to downshift the manual transmission back toward first. As he’s downshifting, the parachute and gravity assist the slowdown efforts through the uphill shutdown, then friction lends a hand as the car leaves the paved track surface and races up a hillside dirt path deep into the jungle. A dirt path that’s clearly there for reason — it’s probably been needed and used before.
Thanks to a driver with a ton of skill, and probably a bit of luck, the car not only stays upright, but keeps the nose pointed forward and allows the pilot to navigate some gnarly curves without ever leaving the narrow path, finally coming to a rest several hundred feet (we feel safe in assuming) into the dense jungle. The rest of the video shows the driver and crew carefully backing the car down the dirt road and onto the track, followed by some commercials, en espanol, of course!
