After nearly two years in the making, Andy McCoy Race Cars has announced the completion of a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle body for use in Pro Mod and Top Sportsman. McCoy, who is known for the wildly popular 1970 Plymouth Duster body, decided to build the Chevelle body to give Chevy fans something to drool over. While there is no lack of the bowtie emblem in the doorslammer drag racing world, the Chevelle represents a very unique look compared to the numerous Camaros and Corvettes currently running.
“The Chevelle is one of the coolest muscle cars of that era and I’m really pleased with how well it turned out,” McCoy said. “It took longer than we anticipated, but I’m glad we finally have a Chevy body ready for the drag strip. It’s narrow and sleek and will be very competitive.”
McCoy first began working on the Chevelle nearly two years ago, but the day to day operations of maintaining a successful business made it difficult to find time to focus on the design. Because of the success of McCoy’s race cars on the track, demand for customer orders increased, which took precedence over new projects. The bulk of Andy’s 2011 season was spent focusing on his own Pro Extreme Duster, which was driven to an ADRL championship by Jason Hamstra.
“We learned a lot from the success we had with the Duster and that helped us in the creation of this car, but every time I thought it was ready for the drag strip I would find another area I could make improvements,” McCoy said. “I thought I had finished this project at least 15 times before. Now it’s finally ready.”
