Maggio’s New Camaro runs a 6.09

Mike Maggio’s brand new 70 ½ Camaro ran an outrageous 6.095 @ 238.72 mph off the trailer and he has yet to really get started. News of the Chris Duncan built Pro Street entry first hit the press in March of this year still in conceptual form. Maggio made his opening debut at the Pacific Street Car Associations Racin’ 4 Jason Nationals in early May where he stunned the crowd and PSCA officials with the exceptional run. It was the first time any PSCA racer had broken the 6.0 range.

The 115’ wheel base Camaro is powered by a 451 cubic inch blown alcohol Brad Anderson engine that has been sleeved and stroked. It produces a whopping 3300 horse power. Maggio said, “We are running a bit fat right now and we can go faster.” The PSI blower is the same application found on alcohol funny cars. I got a brief lesson from Maggio on blower rotor application. He explained that currently they are running a D rotor which is small in comparison.  He explained, “We could run a C rotor, which is slightly larger. It would still fit in the same case and produce 400 more horse power though increasing the boost by 6-8 lbs. We would also still be legal for the class.” As if 3300 horse power were not enough, the upgrade would produce at least 3700 horse power should the team need just a little extra.

Maggio has teamed with Pro Mod Champion Kirk Kuhns for the project. Kuhns built the engine and will work with Maggio to tune the engine. Currently the team is working all the bugs out of the car. Maggio said, “After the 6.09, I thought it would be easy. I have learned foremost that I don’t know everything. Our challenge has been change ups between tracks and weather conditions.” I caught up with Maggio at the Auto Club Drag way in Fontana where the team was busy working on details and improvements. Maggio plans to do as much testing as he can between races to gain some seasoning with his new car. “I hope we can run 5.70’s to 5.80’s at 250 mph with this car. I have been told it’s a realistic goal.” Maggio and his team hope to be consistently in the 5 second range for this year’s Street Car Super Nationals event. With this kind of potential, perhaps it will be the West Coasts turn in the nations biggest East vs. West challenge.
