Earning the right to have the number one on your race car after a year of racing in any of the NMRA’s heads-up is a pretty difficult task. During the grueling six-race NMRA season there are a number of challenges a racer will face, and must overcome to lock up a championship. Coming into the NMRA World Finals defending Street Outlaw champ Phil Hines was third in points standings, but showed he truly has the heart of a champion by winning the event, and brining home the series title with the help of ProCharger.
Hines is one of the most feared competitors on the NMRA tour, his three Street Outlaw championships speak volumes about his dedication to winning. This year didn’t start as planned for the defending champion when he experienced catastrophic engine failure at his first event. “At Lights Out in February I tried something new and stuck a big blower on my aluminum motor. Apparently the engine did not like the 46 pounds of boost I fed it and the block cracked,” Hines explains.
Even with that rough start he wasn’t discouraged and pressed on with his season. Hines went to his backup iron block motor while BES repaired the aluminum mill. After the motor switch, Hines struggled getting his Mustang down the track but never gave up. The issues getting the car to work were mostly due to off-season removal of 200 pounds out of his boosted Mustang to become more competitive at outlaw heads-up races.
Ultimately, Hines went back to his iron block motor for the NMRA finals, even after the aluminum motor was repaired. That decision, mixed with his consistent performance on the track allowed Hines to make his way to the finals at Bowling Green, and win the championship.
Hines will admit that his winning ways are a team effort and ProCharger is a big part of that. “ProCharger helps me out tremendously with anything that I need to be fast and consistent. Through their product quality and support they have never let me down. The results speak for themselves when you look at all the wins and championships,” Hines Says.
