Just six weeks after crashing his gorgeous twin-turbo Mustang at the NMCA West Bakersfield race earlier this season, Scott Oksas was back in action this past weekend at the Lucas Oil NMCA West Coast Shootout in Pomona. The car is a ‘70.5 Camaro Chris Duncan Race Cars chassis purchased from fellow racer Mike Maggio, and Oksas moved quickly after his mishap in Bakersfield, picking up this car and outfitting it with five-second performance potential in no time. The car runs a Brad Anderson Engineering 521 cubic-inch HEMI engine backed by a Rossler transmission and Pro Torque converter, and a pair of Precision turbochargers help to provide the motivation for low six-second elapsed times on the track.

Oksas and his crew had a nice showing at the NMCA race this past weekend, qualifying 10th out of the 14-car qualified field with a 6.81 at 236 MPH. He then proceeded to take out Randy Walker in the first round of competition. Mike Hammi wasn’t able to make the lane call in the second round, sending Oksas on to the third round, where he’d face Joe Lepone Jr. in the nitrous-inhaling, Musi-powered 903 cubic-inch ’70 Duster.  Lepone had won the last NMCA West race, and the two cars were relatively evenly-matched performance-wise. A holeshot for Lepone ended Oksas’ weekend one round prior to the final, but all in all, it was a great showing for a guy who stuffed his car into the wall just a short time prior. As this was the first race out for the all-new combination, expect to see drastically-improved performances as the longtime racer gets a handle on the setup.
