It’s fair to say Steve Jackson is the envy of drag racers everywhere after unveiling his second state-of-the-art, Jerry Bickel Race Cars-built Chevrolet Camaro in a period of less than three months.
One of the sports most diverse and popular drivers, the Evans, Georgia native has virtually done it all in drag racing, and he’s done it the old fashioned way, ascending from the dimly-lit, backroad strips of the south swiping rent money in high-stakes grudge races, to the world of radial tire racing and, in his very first try, an ADRL Pro Nitrous championship. His successes, his tenacity behind the wheel, and his marketability have taken him to places all across the Eastern United States and even the Middle East. And not only has he won, but he’s set records in virtually every arena he’s stepped foot in.
Now, his progression through the ranks is set to take him to the one venue that he hasn’t put his fingerprint on yet: the NHRA.
On Tuesday, Jackson revealed the Bahrain 1 Chevrolet Camaro that he’ll campaign in his foray into the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series in 2017, where he’ll compete in the full slate of 12 races with the backing of Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa from the Kingdom of Bahrain. Driving a 1968 Camaro with identical colors in the Arabian Pro Series this winter, Jackson smashed the roots blower world record with a scintillating 3.640 and captured Bahrain Drag Racing World Championship and the Arabian Pro Series World Championship, and if he can continue that kind of momentum with his supercharged combination stateside, the usual NHRA championship frontrunners may gain a little bit of company come October.
