Over the last thirty years, the California Independent Funny Car Association has been the champion of all things Funny Car in the nation’s most populated state — and six surrounding states and Canada. Despite “California” prominently featured in the name, they support Funny Car racing on the entire western seaboard. The series organized to keep the racing relatively affordable — the cars are alcohol-burning supercharged machines capable of running mid-seven second elapsed times, with consistency and a good show being most important.
The series is headed up by Jim Maher of Good Vibrations Motorsports, who was elected President of the series in 1989 and remains its ‘Big Man on Campus’ today. Currently there are twelve teams that run as part of the circuit, with wild machines like “The Dragon Slayer” Corvette of Ron Ward (pictured above) to the sweet flamed Mustang owned and driven by Kevin Sarginson.
The rules are simple — a flip-top-style Funny Car body, gasoline or alcohol, blowers and turbos are permitted — and even nitrous on unblown entries. No weight minimum, no cubic inch limit, heads-up 7.50 index racing.
The CIFCA will be holding their 30th Anniversary show coming up in just a few weeks, over the weekend of September 12-13 at Sacramento Raceway Park in northern California. The series offers a points fund, nice payouts, and is centered around providing a great show for the fans. If you’re in the area (or anywhere close by) you owe it to yourself to check these guys out.
Good Vibrations Racing supports the series and is able to supply its competitors with all of the parts they need, as supercharging and mechanical fuel injection is one of the specialties of the Good Vibrations team. They have 25 years of experience with these types of products and are the factory authorized dealer for Enderle injection parts.
