As anyone that’s ever built or worked around high performance engines can attest, few things can deliver attention-grabbing sound like installing an aftermarket camshaft. The hard hitting rumble they produce while cruising a car show or stopped at a light is virtually guaranteed to turn some heads. And for that, COMP Cams has produced a line of camshafts known as “Thumpr Cams” that deliver an aggressive sound like no other on the market. These cams are designed with a long exhaust duration and other grind elements to create an unmistakable exhaust note. They are produced in hydraulic flat tappet, hydraulic roller, and hydraulic retro-fit roller varieties for carbureted and fuel injected engines for Chrysler, GM, and Ford applications.
Among the Thumpr offerings and one of the more popular models is that for the 4.6L and 5.4L SOHC Modular V8 engines found in the 2004 and up Ford Mustang GT and GT500. COMP has three distinctly different offerings for these engines:
– Thumpr that provides a great idle tone with added horsepower gains
– Mutha Thumpr which is the largest cam compatible with the stock head and producing a rough idle
– Big Mutha Thumpr with what is described as an extremely rough idle and is compatible with stock valve springs but requires a built engine with ported heads.
While browsing YouTube, we located several examples of Mustangs sporting the Thumpr cams and putting their impressive exhaust notes on display.
In addition to the Thumpr cam, this 2006 GT also has MAC long tube headers, MAC Prochamber crossovers, and axle-back exhaust system.
This 2008 GT sports the Mutha Thumpr cam along with Livernois Phaser Limiters, a Tillman SCT Tune, Steeda cold air intake, Steeda UD Pulleys, an Off Road X-pipe, and Magnaflow Mufflers.
This GT is about as aggressive-sounding as they come, combining the Big Mutha Thumpr with ported stock heads, Ford Racing shorty headers, high flow cats to an X-pipe, and Magnaflow axle-back exhaust.
