Anyone that can say they don’t like those big honkin’ HEMI cars, are lying through their teeth. They’re fast, they’re flashy, and they epitomize ‘cool.’ While the SS/AH HEMI Shootout that takes place at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis is the most sought after crown for these diehard Chrysler racers, the record-setting conditions at Maple Grove’s annual Dutch Classic stand as a close second and one they champ at the bit for all season.
This year’s Dutch Classic HEMI Shootout that took place last weekend didn’t disappoint, with great side-by-side racing and near-record performances from these monstrous factory race cars. And what better way to experience it than with some great video captured for all of the Super Stock and HEMI fans unable to make the trek to Pennsylvania. Kick back and crank up the volume!
David Barton led the 13-car field into eliminations with his top qualifying effort of 8.311 at 160.52 miles per hour, an would receive a solo in round one. Meanwhile, Charlie Westscott would blast to a record-tying 8.29 to advance, along with Jim Daniels, Don Bales, John Baughman, Gary Wolkwitz, and Westcott Sr.
8.3-second laps were the specialty of the day in round two, where Westcott again dropped low ET of the round at 8.324 that edged Wolkwitz, Barton, and Daniels, who also advanced. In the semifinal round, a stellar matchup on paper was spoiled when Westcott experienced mechanical trouble and slowed, sending Daniels into the final where he would meet Wolkwitz. In the final, Daniels walked away with the crown with an 8.342-second run as Wolkwitz had trouble.
