Ford is responsible for perhaps some of the most iconic names to come out of the late 1960’s muscle car wars. First among them of course is the Mustang and all of its variants including Boss, Shelby, Bullitt, and of course Cobra Jet. The all-white purpose-built drag racers really came into their own at the 1968 WinterNationals, where they blew away the competition. 40 years later, Ford brought the Cobra Jet back, and it is now entering its third iteration with the 2012 model.
Ford Racing put up a brief history of the Cobra Jet model, as well as a look behind the scenes at the manufacturing process at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. This is the same assembly plant where the original Cobra Jet Mustang was built over 40 years ago.
The 2012 Cobra Jet Mustang will also mark the first time where customers can choose one of three cars; red, white, or blue. Up until now, all Cobra Jet Mustangs have only been available in white. All 50 of the 2012 Cobra Jet Mustangs are being produced at the AAI assembly plant where all Mustangs are produced (and which was recently the scene of a work stoppage and parts shortage.) Perhaps of most interesting bit though comes from the comments of Mark Wilson towards the very of the video. He says that they are working on several interesting projects, something that’s “never been done before.” Turbocharged Mustang, anybody? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’re already getting excited.
