Missouri-based Fuel Altered racer John Umlauf, Jr. walked away uninjured from a frightening high-speed crash on Saturday while competing at the MoKan Dragway’s 52nd annual Labor Day Weekend Classic.
Umlauf, driving his nitro-burning Wicked Wedge 1948 Fiat Coupe, lost control after his machine reportedly spilled oil under the rear slicks, sending him careening into the guardrail. The impact sent the car back across the track — on fire — and onto its lid, where it tumbled to a stop. Fortunately, Unlauf was awake and alert thought the ordeal and was able to climb from the burning wreckage sore but otherwise unscathed.
The Umlauf team issued the following statement to its fans, assuring them of John’s condition:
As many of you know, the Wicked Wedge went for a wicked ride last night. The scariest moment of our lives turned into the most thankful moment of our lives when John walked away with no injuries. We just want to say thank you to everyone who has reached out to our family with thoughts and prayers. We are blown away with the kindness, love and generosity of our racing family. Thank you to every racing crew who was there last night to help John out of the car safely. We cannot say thank you enough for how much we appreciate each of you. John is now home and relaxing. He is still very sore but doing well.
