The truth is, we all take a risk each and every time we put a car on a race track. There are of course situations completely within our own control and others that are not, be it over-driving a car out of the groove when we shouldn’t, to unforeseen mechanical issues we really can’t do much about when they happen at speed. But then, you’re also at the mercy of the racer in the other lane, who also operates within those very same principles. You can be doing everything right, but if he doesn’t, well…
This was illustrated quite well at TX2K15 last week in Houston, Texas, when a Nissan GT-R and a big-tire, rotary-powered Mazda RX7 lined up on the strip at the Royal Purple Raceway.
The RX7, as a more purpose-built and naturally quicker car, gets well out on the GT-R, but audibly begins to encounter transmission troubles at the 330-foot mark. At that point, either fluid from the transmission got under the tires or the spike in engine RPM broke the tires loose, which sent him into a fishtail. The driver of the GT-R in the other lane, meanwhile, has the hammer down and only realizes what’s about to happen once it’s too late, as he crams on the brakes just in time to plow into the passenger side of the RX7 that has crossed right into his path.
The resulting collision sends the two into the concrete guardrail, folding up the entire front end of the previously-immaculate GT-R, and doing a real number on the whole right side of the RX7.
Fortunately, both drivers are A-Ok, but as you can see by the reaction of the driver of the GT-R, he’s anything but pleased, as he removes his helmet and proceeds to launch it in a moment of rage out onto the return road or the pit area. As the video cuts, he’s approaching the battered RX7, so we don’t get to see whether there was a confrontation between the two drivers or not.
This just goes to show that anything can happen when you sign up to race your car.
