Stop, rewind. Stop, rewind.
The Limited Drag Radial finale at the U.S. Street Nationals on Sunday evening was so good, so eventful, that it simply couldn’t be watched once. Thank goodness for the DVR function, right?
The final round, pitting jack-of-all-trades wheelman Kevin Fiscus opposite of fellow Floridian Justin Swanstrom, had it all — two cars locked together in performance, a good old fashioned staging duel, a little carnage, and a did-that-really-happen wheelstand for style points.
A mere .001-seconds separated Swanstrom and Fiscus in qualifying with runs of 4.243 and 4.244, respectively (they were numbers one and two), and that slim margin carried right over into eliminations, later setting the stage for an epic final round. Fiscus, driving the familiar bright orange Fox body owned by Kentuckian Willard Kinzer, fired the first shot in eliminations, uncorking a 4.185 for low elapsed time of the weekend in the opening stanza, but Swanstrom was never far behind, and by the semifinal round the two were welded together once again, with Fiscus ousting Lyle Barnett with a 4.223 and Swanstrom nearly matching it with a 4.224-second defeat of Scott Husted.
That, perhaps, was the stimulus for what became a 39-second staging battle, with Swanstrom finally bumping in first, followed by Fiscus. Out of the gate, Swanstrom was already two-hundredths in the hole to Fiscus, but it all came undone in spectacular fashion when the nitrous-assisted powerplant in Swanstrom’s Mustang self-disintegrated, belching flames out of the car top, right, and above and scattering parts across the racetrack.

While all eyes were on the fireworks in Swanstrom’s lane, Fiscus had his hands plenty full, as well, as his mount began to climb the ring gear at speed and sailed through the backhalf of the 1/8-mile on the rear wheels, setting them down in the lights to claim one of the wildest victories in recent memory.
Certainly, there’s a lot of racing left to do in 2017, but that one might be difficult to top.
