The drag racing action stateside could be described as relatively quiet at the moment, teams here are just getting their cars out for preliminary 2010 test sessions – but over in Qatar they are in the midst of a tight championship points battle as their season winds down. While Dan Millen is also over there running in Outlaw 10.5, the big news of the week was Tennessee native Von Smith and his Pro Extreme ’68 Camaro. In their round 4 event, Smith laid down the fastest speed to ever to be performed in the 1/8th mile by a door car with his 3.74 at 208.55 mph pass with an amazing .986 60 foot time.

Representing the Al-Anabi racing team as well as Barwa real estate, this team did nothing but impress us. From the record 3.74 run to how consistent the team was able to keep the car all weekend, following up the first round 3.74 with a 3.76 at 207 ultimately knocking Al-Anabi racing team owner Sheikh Khalid Al Thani out of eliminations in the semi-final round. Sheikh did get off the tree slightly quicker however, with a .022 reaction time to Smith’s .026. In the team’s 3rd final round appearance in 4 races Smith took on Ali Ryan in his ’67 Camaro and Smith took the win letting off with a 3.94 at just below 200mph.
Currently leading the Pro Extreme points Smith looks to finish off this season with the championship trophy to defend last season’s championship win. The rest of the competition still in contention is hoping to change that though. Congrats goes out to Smith and Crew Chief Howard Moon as well as all the others at Al-Anabi racing involved in making this record pass dream a reality.
