NMCA RACE RECAP

Event recap courtesy NMCA Digital:

Scorpion Pro Street drew fifteen competitors to the famous Route 66 Raceway. After an intense three rounds of qualifying, Chris Rini topped the field with a 6.18 at 232 mph, followed by Joe Dunne who ran a 6.24, and coming in third on the list was John Sullivan with a 6.31. It was Billy Glidden and Joe Dunne who had the cars to beat this hot weekend, and both met up in the finals in a classic Chevy versus Ford match up. When the tree fell, a holeshot from Dunne and some tire slip from Glidden resulted in the Pat Musi-tuned Chevy getting the event win for the second year in a row. In the NMRA versus NMRA runoff, Dunne faced the NMRA’s Turbonetics Pro Outlaw winner, Mike Murillo.

In Mickey Thompson Super Street 10.5W, Mike Yedgarian ended up on the pole with his newly rebuilt Pontiac, running a 6.75 at 214 mph, but Nick Scavo, who qualified mid-pack, also had his sights set on the Nitto Diamond Tree Super Bowl Championship Ring. Both twin-turbo machines met in the finals and when the lights dropped, Scavo left on Yedgarian, but the Pontiac was able to outrun Scavo’s purple machine to get the win, the first for this Canadian team. Yedgarian raced the winner of ProCharger Super Street Outlaw, Sam Vincent, but lost.

ARP Nostalgia Pro Street drew a twenty-car field, with Dave Beeson topping the bunch for the second race in a row. Unfortunately he broke, and it was Kevin Parent and Jim Jarrett who rose to the top. The finals between these two resulted in a close match, but in the end, Parent prevailed with a 7.41 to 7.56 race. Parent then beat EFI Renegade racer Bob Cook in the Super Bowl shootout.

In Vortech Xtreme Street, Bill Trovato ran an 8.00 at 171 mph to qualify number one, followed by Jamie Stanton who ran 8.06 to get the second spot. Those two also ended up in the finals once again this year, but Stanton redlit, giving the win to Trovato. He was also able to take out NMRA Drag Radial winner Sean Lyon in the runoff.

In Comp Cams Pro Stock, teammates Greg Delaney and Skip Baskin met up in the finals with their clean Chevys. When the lights dropped, it was Baskin who was able to pass the Camaro in a close 8.57 to 8.59 match. Baskin, unfortunately lost to NMRA Hot Street winner Robbie Blankenship.

BFGoodrich Street Radial, eight cars showed up and Brad Schehr got the number one position with a 8.75, followed closely by Mike Fratena’s 8.79. Those two boosted cars also met in the finals, and Schehr got a slight holeshot and was able to squeak by Fratena for the event win. Schehr returned and blew the tires off and lost against Bruce Hemminger in the runoff.

Drag Racer Magazine Mean Street had six cars in attendance, with Don Baskin getting the number one spot with a 10.13. It came down to Jeremy Gillam and Baskin in the finals, but it was Baskin who prevailed running a 10.23 to take out Gillam’s red Mustang.

Baskin won his runoff against Eibach Springs Pure Street’s winner, Brandon Alsept.

In the index classes, Andy Warren won in FSC Nostalgia Muscle Car, in Eaton Posi Late Model EFI Dave Hounsel won, and in McCleod clutches Open Comp, Buick driver John Hixon won. In Indy Cylinder Head Nostalgia Super Stock, Russ Berens won when Jeff Meece broke out on a single. And the overall winner in the TREMEC True Street was Phil Delaney with a 9.73 average.
In the NMCA versus NMRA runoff, the NMRA side ultimately won, five to seven, which meant all the NMRA winners received Nitto Diamond Tree Championship rings. The NMRA now leads in Super Bowl wins, next year the Mustangs won’t be so lucky.

NMRA RACE RECAP

NMRA event recap courtesy NMRA Digital:

Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL, was the scene on the weekend of July 15-18, 2010 for the Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing – an awesome display of hundreds of doorslammers of all domestic makes and models in the NMRA and NMCA’s racing classes.

In the Turbonetics Pro Outlaw 10.5 class, Mike Murillo turned in a stout 6.79 at nearly 216 MPH to lead the field into the eliminations sessions. There, it would come down to Conrad Scarry and Murillo in the final round in a repeat of the last event at Milan Dragway. When the tree came down, Murillo blasted off to an awesome 6.84 to Scarry’s 7.17 for the win, ending Scarry’s unbeaten streak. Murillo hammered the tree with a .006 reaction time to win over Joe Dunne and clinch the Super Bowl victory for the NMRA!

John Macdonald let everything hang out during the ProCharger Super Street Outlaw qualifying sessions to qualify in the top spot with a 7.34 blast. John Urist ended Macdonald’s weekend in the semifinals, moving on to face nemesis Sammy Vincent in the final round. There, Vincent uncorked a killer 7.35 at nearly 192 MPH to put Urist on the trailer and claim his first win of the season. In his SB run against Mike Yedgarian, he unwrapped an unreal 191 MPH, 7.30 blast for the win.

The DiabloSport EFI Renegade class came down to the man who could survive the longest. After qualifying number one, Bob Cook rode his momentum to the final round to face off against first-time finalist Chad Allmandinger. Cook then ran it out the back door with a consistent 8.59 at over 161 MPH to take the win in the final round. Cook was then overtaken at the stripe by Kevin Parent in their matchup.

It took all season, but someone finally dethroned Jason Lee. During BFGoodrich Tire Drag Radial qualifying, Sean Lyon turned in an 8.04 in the heat to sit atop the ladder. Once eliminations started, Lyon ran his machine all the way to the finals against ’09 Champion Lee. A side-by-side battle and 8.00 elapsed time put the win light on in Lyon’s favor with a .006 margin-of-victory as he took his first NMRA win of the season. Bill Trovato then took a holeshot victory from him in the Bowl.

Robbie Blankenship’s 8.59 led the naturally-aspirated Edelbrock Hot Street contingent into the elimination sessions. Blankenship then defeated teammate Don Bowles Sr. on a holeshot to meet up with first-time finalist Rick Riccardi. In the finals, Blankenship let it all hang out to take the win with a 16-thousandths MOV. He matched up with Don Baskin in the Super Bowl and took the win.

After early-season struggles, Tim Matherly is finally getting a handle on his 2010 Mustang, as he took top honors during Steeda Real Street’s qualifying rounds with a strong 9.52 elapsed time. Eliminations found Matherly meeting up with longtime rival Bruce Hemminger, where Hemminger took the win as Matherly shut it down early. Hemminger also won over Brad Schehr in the Bowl.

Jim St. Charles has been running well over the last few races in Eibach Springs Pure Street, and here in Illinois he qualified at the top of the field with a 10.27 at nearly 132 MPH. But once eliminations began, Brandon Alsept and Flyin’ Brian Meyer crushed the competition to face off for all the marbles in the final round, with Alsept coming out on top – 10.24 to 10.39. He was then taken out by Don Baskin in their Super Bowl matchup.

At the last event in Michigan, Matt Amrine took home his first ACT Factory Stock victory, and entered the elimination rounds here in Illinois as the top qualifier. He carried the momentum from that performance into the finals, where he met up with Michigan runner-up Tommy Godfrey. Godfrey turned in an 11.20 to overcome Amrine’s holeshot on the starting line and take the win. He then lost to NMCA NSS competitor Jeff Meece in the Super Bowl.

In the Exedy Clutch Modular Muscle class, number-one-qualifier Jason Epstein rode his Mustang all the way to the final round, where he met up with 2009 class Champion Reggie Burnette Jr. There, Epstein went -.015 red to hand the Champ the win. He also won over Dave Hansell in the Super Bowl.

Detroit Locker’s Truck and Lightning class had Matt Chobirko turning in a .009 reaction time to sit atop the ladder heading into eliminations. The final round saw ’09 Champ Bob Cochran taking the tree against Ray Johnson’s 1st-Gen Lightning. On a double-breakout pass, Johnson was the lesser offender for the win. However, he lost to Andy Warren in the Super Bowl portion of the competition.

In the Steeda Open Comp class, Chuck Hockenberry ended up in the final round against hitter Jon H. Pickering. There, Pickering ran just .002 above his dial to take the win as Hockenberry broke out. Pickering also took home his pairing his in the Super Bowl portion of the race over NMCA racer John Hixon.

JDM Engineering’s Super Stang class brought out the latest in Ford iron. Justin Loftis and Miles Wagoner, both first-time finalists and Brenspeed-backed racers, took the tree with a chance for all the marbles. When all was said and done, Wagoner ran closer to his dial-in for the win in this ultra-cool class. He also took the win over Phil Delaney in the Super Bowl.

In the Tremec True Street class, Philip Delaney took home the gold.
