Although few actually remember it, Justin “Big Chief” Shearer, “Daddy Dave” Comstock, and Jeff “AZN” Bonnett of Street Outlaws fame were actually television stars — and grudge race hustlers — long before the Discovery Channel rolled into and set up camp in Oklahoma City.
Nearly a decade ago, the trio from the 405 appeared on a pair of episodes of the original PINKS program, which aired on the SPEED Channel, back when the show was a true contest for pink slips. The team, known as Wide Open Throttle Racing, first took on (and won) a Honda Civic, with their nitrous-equipped 1989 Ford Mustang with Daddy Dave at the wheel. They were later invited back for the episode that you see here, coined by PINKS creator and host Rich Christensen as the Winners Episode.
The episode, which was filmed at the now-defunct Speedworld Dragway in Surprise, Arizona, pitted Wide Open Throttle and their Fox body Mustang with a 355 cubic-inch small-block Chevy with a 4-barrel and Vortec heads, against Alexander Djordjevic, his driver Chris Chow, and the famous Woolly Mammoth 1977 Vega packing a 468-inch, nitrous-fed big-block for power. The Woolly Mammoth was also a previous pink-slip winner, and was invited back to be a part of this special episode.
While Comstock handled the driving, the then-24-year old Shearer, AZN, and their entourage from OKC played the role of negotiators and hustlers against the outspoken Djordjevic, aiming to work the races, the power adders, the lengths, and other elements of the best-of-five race into their favor.
We don’t want to give way the ending to those who didn’t catch the episode on SPEED the first time around, but we will say that this one got pretty heated during negations and even more interesting on the race track. And yes, someone did lose their car.
