Back in December, the team at Larry Jeffers Race Cars in Missouri shared a teaser image of what was described as a purpose-built radial tire car, destined for  debut at Donald Long’s $50,000-to-win Lights Out 7 race in South Georgia next month. That photo and the accompanying text set off rampant speculation concerning who the new car might belong to — someone already entrenched in radial racing, or a new face entirely.

Well, we finally know the answer to that.

DSC_2280On Monday, PDRA Pro Nitrous ace Keith Haney unveiled the newest addition to his racing stable, a new Chevrolet Camaro built in almost complete secrecy for Radial vs The World racing by Jeffers. Haney, who co-owns and operates the Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park in Oklahoma, shares that he’s gotten to know many of the figures in radial racing through the track’s Radial Revenge Tour races, becoming a fan of the cars and the races.

“All of them think I talk the game but don’t want to walk the game,” Haney said. “Well, I’m not coming out as a pretender in this class; I’m coming out as a contender. My combination is going to work in a radial car.

“I’ve been jacking with people for six months that I was going to put radials on my Pro Nitrous car, “Haney continued. “Well, I didn’t do that, but I did the next best thing.”

The new car is nearly identical to Haney’s 3.7-second Pro Nitrous car, and with a brand new Reher-Morrison powerplant and Switzer Dynamics nitrous onboard, it shouldn’t be too far off it’s big brothers’ performance one dialed in.

“My main focus is PDRA Pro Nitrous,” Haney said. “I want to go for a world championship in my nitrous car. We ended 2015 on an outstanding note, and we’re ready to start 2016 on another outstanding note. We went from the bottom part of the field to being in the top three or four. I’m looking forward to chasing the championship in PDRA Pro Nitrous.

I’ve been jacking with people for six months that I was going to put radials on my Pro Nitrous car. Well, I didn’t do that, but I did the next best thing.

“I built a radial car to have some fun. I want to hurt some feelings in the radial class, just for fun.”

Haney says that when he set out to build the new car in July, he wanted to keep it a secret from everyone … including his own crew. When the new engine was ordered, his team believed it was for the Pro Nitrous car. Instead of arriving at his shop, it was sent to Brandon Switzer and his team with only “RVW” marked on the crate. The transmission, an M&M automatic piece, was sent directly to Jeffers. Even some mechanics in Jeffers’ shop weren’t privy to what was being built.

“But I didn’t want anybody to know — nobody,” Haney said. “So for the last six months, I’ve been building a radial car with Larry Jeffers. It’s been interesting and fun. This has been six months of keeping quiet, and I absolutely cannot believe I’ve made it this long,” Haney said. “Larry Jeffers did just as good a job keeping it quiet as I did.”

The, on January 9, Haney finally told his race team about it. “They all about killed me,” Haney said. “We’re going to unveil it at Donald Long’s Lights Out 7 race. He doesn’t even know that I’m coming.”

Haney will debut the car at Lights Out 7 on February 18-21 at the South Georgia Motorsports Park, where he’ll face the strongest field of contenders that Radial vs The World has ever seen, with the biggest prize in radial racing history on the line.

“There are a lot of cocky guys in this class, and I think I fit right in. I thought, ‘What the hell? I’ll jump in there and play with those boys.'”
