Quartet Of Darrell Gwynn’s Diggers On Block At Barrett- Jackson

TAD 1Top Fuel legend Darrell Gwynn will soon part ways with four of the historic race cars he drove during his illustrious career. The four-pack of dragsters will roll across the most famous auction block in the automotive landscape at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, this weekend. Billed as the “World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction’s”, Barrett-Jackson annually draws scores of gearheads with money to spend miles into the Arizona desert for a gasoline-fueled frenzy. This year, Gwynn’s cars are sure to bring a crowd of their own, if not for the historic value of their individual accomplishments, then certainly for the legendary name emblazoned on their slender sheetmetal liveries.

The first of the foursome (top photo) is Gwynn’s 1982 Bob Jenkins Top Alcohol Dragster that carried Darrell to the 1983 Top Alcohol Dragster world championship, making he and his father, Jerry, the first father/son championship winners in NHRA history. The car was also the first alky dragster into the 6.30’s and 6.20’s.

Next is Darrell’s Dave Uyehera-built Top Fueler (below left), his first ride in the preeminent class in all of drag racing. The silver and maroon digger debuted in 1985 and was the first car in the 5.2-second range. It powered Darrell to a sixth-place finish in his first season and a second-place spot in the 1986 season before being retired in favor of the swoopier, but ill-fated, streamliner up next.

In 1987, Gwynn once again teamed with Uyehera to field one of the most innovative cars of the era, the Budliner Streamliner (above right). While the design turned a lot of heads, it never really caught on, but Gwynn did manage to push the car to four national event wins and a handful of national records in both the NHRA and IHRA sanctions over the course of two seasons.

TF 3Finally, Gwynn’s Coors Extra Gold Top Fuel car, originally built by Mike Case. This car reset the national record three times while winning five national events and helping him become the 7th member of the Four Second Club. This would be the last car Darrell would race competitively in the class, as it was a sister car to the one he was driving when he endured his career-ending crash in England.

While Barrett-Jackson is often unpredictable, it seems likely that each of these cars will draw big bucks. Each car was painstakingly restored by Darrell and Jerry themselves and feature as many original parts as possible. Check them out when they hit the sale stage this weekend. The Barrett-Jackson auction airs on the Discovery and Velocity channels.
