The Australians seem to have a lock on the bizarre drag races. Three years ago, ANDRA Top Fuel racers Phil Lamattina and Alan Dobson engaged in an engine-exploding, coasting affair decided by a mere .016 seconds in one of the strangest racers we’ve ever seen. But now, another pair of Aussies may have topped it.
At the 400 Thunder series Coates Hire West Coast Nitro event at the Perth Motorplex over the weekend, Pro Bike riders Maurice Allen and Ryan Learmonth were paired up in the semifinal round of eliminations that would ultimately be decided not by their motorcycles, but by their own level of fitness.
At the flash of the green, both bikes quickly stall, with Allen’s bike coasting some 200 feet downtrack, with Learmonth dead in the water sitting just a few feet off the starting line. With neither rider able to re-fire their motorcycles, and the drag race still a wide open affair, the two riders hope off their mounts and begin an epic footrace to the 1/4-mile in a scene reminiscent of the closing minutes of the movie Talladega Nights.
While Learmonth closed the gap, Allen’s distance advantage played into his favor as he crossed the stripe several seconds ahead of his competitor. falling to his knees in exhaustion after pushing the 600-plus pound bike more than 1,000 feet down the Perth strip. Allen’s final elapsed time was more than three minutes. Allen later lost in the final round to Glenn Wooster.
