Every once in a while you have the opportunity to see a true supercar at a your local drag strip; and we’re not talking about a Corvette. Everyone seems to stop what they’re doing, tap their friend on the shoulder and point, just to see what a car worth more than most people’s homes is capable of — as the case with this hybrid Porsche – that’s right, hybrid.
Dropping off a bag of cash totaling $845,000 on the showroom floor of your local Porsche dealer will get you a base model, state-of-the-art hybrid 918 straight from Deutschland. German engineers managed to squeeze an impressive 608 horsepower out of the naturally-aspirated, high revving 4.6-liter engine, with red-line numbers north of 9,000 thanks to its flat-plane crank engine design. Electric motors add an additional 154 horsepower to the rear tires, with 127 horsepower powering the front tries, all culminating in a staggering 887 horsepower.
Before we go to the video, we want to reiterate that a 918 is a hyper-car that was designed to encompass everyone’s idea of what a car should be — becoming the first production car in the world to ever break the seven-minute barrier at the Nurburgring with a 6 minute, 57-second lap time.
While rolling up to the line, and not doing so much as cleaning off the tires, it’s obvious that everyone was patiently waiting to see what almost $1 million translates to in the 1/4-mile. With the drop of the christmas tree, the launch control easily takes advantage of the prepped 1320-foot racing surface and allows the 918 to power down the track effortlessly. When all is said and done, the Palm Beach Raceway timing board displays a more than respectable 10.16 at 145 mph.
