Forth Worth, Texas racer Jason Lumpkin was fatally injured on Sunday while competing at an Import Face-Off event at the Kansas International Dragway in Maize, Kansas, near Wichita.
The crash was called in to emergency dispatchers at around 1:30 p.m. The first firefighters to respond to the scene reported that Lumpkin was unconscious and not breathing. Dispatchers requested the Jaws of Life to extricate Lumpkin from his destroyed Honda CRX and transported him to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses say that Lumpkin’s car was traveling around 150 miles per hour when he lost control near the finish line. At that point, the car went left and into the steel guardrail, sending it airborne, where it rolled over an estimated two to three times. Lumpkin remained in critical condition for several hours before his family confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries.
