Big events bring out the best competitors and that’s what TX2K17 is all about: seeing some of the best street cars in the world battle it out on the track. Over the years this event has transformed from just a small gathering of Supras, to one of the biggest street car racing events in the world. The drag racing portion of TX2K17 will be huge this year with more racers and big performances expected to light up the scoreboards at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston, and right here on the SpeedVideo.com live stream!
The drag racing at TX2K events always brings out some of the quickest and fastest street cars in the United States. There’s an interesting mixture of cars in all the classes, from high-end exotics to some killer American muscle, and it’s that type of variety that pushes the growth of the drag racing portion of the event each year and provides the fans with great racing action.
For TX2K17 organizer Peter Blach, the growth and excitement of the drag racing is based around the different cars that can compete. “The Street Car class is our biggest heads-up class and is open to pretty much anything. Every vehicle must have a license plate, proof of current registration, and valid insurance. We limit what lightweight body components can be used, require a complete stock chassis, and have other rules to help keep the full-on racecars out,” Blach explains about the class rules.
This ruleset keeps the racing close and allows for the class to grow each year. Racers know that they’ll be competing against true street cars and not a purpose-built race car that’s out of their league. “We’re expecting our largest field yet with 30 to 40 cars trying to get into a 16-car field. If we get that many, we might have to break it up into two fields based on elapsed times. There will be tons of eight-second Mustangs, GTRs, Camaros, Supras, Corvettes, and who knows what else in this class,” Blach says.
Another sensational eliminator at TX2K17 that’s growing is the 2JZ class. This field is chocked full of an array of cars, from your classic Supras to anything that a powerful 2JZ motor can be swapped into. The variety helps to fuel the competition and makes the racing close. “In the 2JZ class the rules are pretty simple: the car must be 2JZ powered and follow the tire and wheel limits for their transmission combination. That opens the door for a lot of cars and will make this an exciting class, for sure,” Blach explains.
