ProCharger Racers Make History (And Records) In Atlanta

Eric Gustafson has been very successful in the NMCA winning the Street Outlaw class title behind the wheel of his Fox body Mustang, but for 2018 he made the long-awaited jump to the Xtreme Pro Mod division. The team is using a chassis built by Gary Naughton Race Cars sporting a slick 1969 Camaro body from Cynergy Composites. Powering the Camaro is a 526 cubic-inch Hemi from Brad Anderson Enterprises that gets its boost from a F-3X-143 blower from ProCharger.

Gustafson debuted the car at the NMCA race in Bradenton where the team was able to make some considerable progress in figuring out the new combination. When it came time to put the Camaro in the beams at Atlanta Dragway during the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, the team had plenty of data to build on and start making some wicked passes. By the close of the weekend Gustafson had made history by collecting what is believed to be the first win in a major Pro Modified series by a ProCharger-equipped car. In the process he also set the eighth-mile record for a centrifugally-supercharged racecar with a 3.75-second hit at over 200 mph.

Check out the video from the NMCA that shows Gustafson blast into the record books in his Camaro.

Every offseason teams spend time and money finding new ways to go faster or how to better apply something they learned in the previous season. Racing in the cut-throat world of radial tire racing requires extra diligence in finding ways to improve your program or you’ll be left behind. In Atlanta, Shawn Ayers, driver of Fletcher Cox’s Mustang known as “Gold Dust” set the Street Outlaw class record while Eric Gustafson made the quickest and fastest centrifugal supercharged pass in drag racing history, each using new ProCharger combinations in their cars.

The Gold Dust Mustang that NFL defensive lineman Fletcher Cox owns got more than a fresh coat of paint this offseason — it gained an all-new driveline, as well. The DiSomma Racing Engines powerplant is backed by a Proformance Racing Transmission and Neal Chance Racing Converters torque converter. A FuelTech FT600 controls the entire package as Ayers makes his runs down the track. The biggest change is the switch from a turbo as a power-adder to a class-legal ProCharger supercharger.

Ayers has been dominant this year in the Street Outlaw class with the new ProCharger combination. At the first NMCA event of 2018 Ayers marched his way through the field to pick up the victory. At the All-Star Nationals, he piloted the Mustang to the winner’s circle and along the way reset the class record with a 4.23-second pass that he later backed up with a 4.24.

Check out this footage from TheRacingVids that shows both runs and gives a great perspective on what it takes to drive one of these radial tire beasts.
