With a small handful of 2011-12 Chevrolet Camaro’s already out in the wild, a number of others under construction, and rumors that some NHRA Pro Stock teams will debut the Camaro body later this season, it’s shaping up to be the year of the Camaro in drag racing. Visitors at the recent PRI Show in Orlando, Fla. were greeted with an up close look at a pair of these new machines, one of which will be debuted this season by Oklahoma native and Top Sportsman competitor Keith Haney.
Haney's Stroupe Race Cars-built 2012 Camaro has been constructed using lightweight carbon fiber components, and is motivated by a Steve Schmidt-prepped, bottled-fed 800-inch bullet.
Haney unveiled his Wall Stroupe Race Cars-built 2012 Camaro in Orlando, which is built to Pro Modified, Pro Nitrous, and Top Sportsman specifications for competition in both the NHRA and ADRL. The Five Star Race Car Bodies ultra lightweight Chevrolet Camaro body weighs in at just 53 pounds. The slick new mount is powered by an 800-plus cubic inch mill built by Steve Schmidt Competition Engines in Indianapolis, with split Dominators and four stages of nitrous oxide. A second Camaro, owned by John Woods Performance Auto in Oklahoma City and to be driven by Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Monroe Guest, is in the works and will compliment Haney’s machine in a two-car effort later this season.
In addition to his racing ventures, Haney has been instrumental in operating the Tulsa Raceway Park near his Broken Arrow, Oklahoma home, and recently partnered with fellow racer and businessman Todd Martin to re-open the historic track for 2012 and beyond after its sale this fall.
Look for Haney to compete in any of the previously mentioned categories in 2012, “depending on what mood I’m in,” he says.
