In the fall of 2010 at the World Street Nationals in Orlando, the former Chevrolet Monte Carlo of Mike Moran sustained heavy damage in a high-speed excursion with the guardrail with new driver Rick Fleck at the wheel, leaving a true piece of doorslammer racing history in battered ruins and it’s very existence in peril.
Less than a year and a half later, this iconic machine has returned, albeit not to the race track but instead to Racing Junk, where someone will have their shot at owning it. Per the ad listing, the Larry Larson Race Cars-built Monte Carlo has been complete;y rebuilt following the crash and is being sold ready-to-race with a turbocharged Small block Ford powerplant paired with a triple-disc clutch, titanium can, a B&J 3-speed transmission, and FAST’s CFI engine management setup. Looking little like its former self in an all-white paint scheme and a more modest look, the Monte is a double frame rail car with a full floater rear and the works. It’s not a 5-second player, but it’s no slouch either.
For those unfamiliar with its history, this is the very car that doorslammer legend Mike Moran tirelessly pressed on over the course of a number of years to become the first turbocharged doorslammer into the five-second zone, despite being a car that was never meant to go that quick. On March 12, 2009 in South Georgia, Moran got the job done, running 5.97 at 251 MPH.
Although it may not effect the ultimate selling price of this machine, there’s no doubt that this is a desirable piece of drag racing history and someone is going to own it.
