E98 is a little different than the typical high octane race gas we smell burning at the track. It’s considered an alternative and more eco-friendly fuel as its primary ingredients are grain and corn – making it boatloads cheaper than regular high octane fuel, though it does burn quicker. Another benefit to this racer is that it’s primarily sourced locally in Michigan. Technical jibber jabber aside, it provides an awesome low-cost alternative fuel for racers in a day and age where saving a few bucks here and there is the name of the game. Ken Stone is one racer who’s recently made the adjustment to running E98 fuel in his ’72 Chevy Vega, and the results yielded thus far have been promising despite the tuning difficulties.

The masterpiece powering this Vega - a 416" LS motor

On his first full pass, which was also a licensing pass off the foot brake – Stone got his Vega down the 1320 in 9.28 seconds clicking the markers at 143 MPH which was also his best pass of all the runs. After some starting line tuning gremlins are sorted out, Stone assures us that this car is running 8.90’s on motor within the next month – come hell or high water.

The all motor power-plant is an L92-based 416″ engine built by Billy Briggs of Motor City Speed. It wears a set of LS3 heads and a solid roller cam, Performance Inductions intake with an Accufab 4500 TB, and runs a 14:1 compression ratio that’s optimal for the fuel being used. After some post-race tear down, Stone believes their starting line stumble is mostly to blame on a partially blown head gasket. We’re all rooting for Stone to get it back together, to the track again and take home that 8 second time slip he’s chasing.
