After quite a few rather successful racing seasons with the good old twin turbo SBC powerplant in his Chevy II Nova, Onofre Benavidez decided to step it up a bit over the off season. While the SBC had enough oomph to get them down the 1/4 mile with a best of 7.09 at 175, the car went over to NoriBilt Custom Fabrication for the install of some fresh Proline power – a sweet BBC with a set of promod 94mm turbos. Among other things, their unique exhaust routing through the top of the fenders raised a few eyebrows, but after trying out multiple exhaust configurations during last night’s testing, they found the upright setup is working the best for them, keeping the front end down just a tad more. For those that want the advantages of the “Bull horn” exhaust but hate the out of place look, something like this setup might be what you’re after.
Head on over to LoneStarStangs for this team’s testing updates.
Once the car was ready to go, NoriBilt and Onofre wasted no time getting it to the track for some test hits, starting off with some runs to the 1/8th, they decided to go for a full 1/4 mile blast, and what a blast it was. While they still had to pull a little boost out on the front half, Onofre still got her down to the stripe in a mere 7.08 seconds, trapping 197 mph. Already knocking a smidgen off their previous best E/T and adding 22 mph to their mph, there’s alot more left in this ’67.
Testing is far from done with this monster as the team plans to make a trip back to San Antonio for more testing when their schedule allows, shooting for the elusive 6.xx timeslip. Judging from their instant MPH improvement, high 6’s should be an easily attainable goal for these guys. While their event schedule for the year is still lightly written in pencil, they’re sure to make an impressive showing at the Street Car Super Nationals at the end of November.
