Many old race cars met a very unfortunate end at the ends of the very drivers who piloted them down the drag strip. Back in the heyday of drag racing, nobody really valued these old dragsters, so after their duty was done the cars were often parted out for cash or to build another car. As a result, many a famous race car has wound up in the scrap heap or rusting away as a shell in some field.
But not the Yankee Peddler, a 1965 Mustang drag car based out of Long Beach. Mike Garrett of Speedhunters snapped some great shots of orange racer, which came out for the recent March Meet. This Mustang has a long and illustrious racing history…and it’s one of just a few true survivors.
So many old dragsters were destroyed during the 1970’s as drag racing became less popular. Those cars that weren’t destroyed were modernized and their historical value was, for lack of a better word, ruined. It’s a shame, because there was so much history in those cars. Now just a handful have survived to make it to the 21st century.
The Yankee Peddler is one of these few survivors. As Garrett points out, this old 289-powered Mustang wears a lot of old stickers with pride. There is history oozing from every corner of this Mustang, and you can almost hear the roar of 60’s dragsters racing down the strip. We’re glad Garrett snapped these pics; there’s even more photos over at Speedhunters, so make sure you check it out.
