We’ve discussed before the virtues of the Extreme Adjustable Billet and Extreme Pro Series 4-Link chassis brackets from RJ Race Cars and Quarter-Max, and as ingenious and successful as the product has been, the Joneses never rest on their laurels, as they are continually working to improve upon its design, scope, and attainability by the end-user.
Originally developed in the late 1990s by family patriarch and founder Rick Jones and his team, the adjustable 4-link brackets take adjustability to new heights, allowing for virtually limitless adjustability in increments of as little as 1/8-inch — thereby providing instant center adjustments considerably more minute than a traditional 4-link bracket could ever achieve.
“We came up with this design to help our customers adjust to the different track conditions they may encounter. This design was created so racers could make adjustments on the fly without changing the ride height of the car,” Rickie says.

The Extreme 4-link uses a unique keyway system for extra strength, which is an industry-first. The bolt-on plates each have six 1/2-inch holes that have a .625-inch spacing. By allowing the 4-link bracket themselves to slide up or down a hole — rather than one simply moving the bars to a different hole in a fixed 4-link system — the degree of adjustability takes on a whole new dimension.
Quarter-Max has a range of options, from materials to plate configuration, including a set of ‘low plates’ intended for steel-body and no-prep-style vehicles and similar to work their unique ride height, and ‘laid-back’ brackets to provide some crossmember positions that its lineup did not have previously. The company also options a setup specifically for welding into 2×3 square-tube back half cars. And, if you’d like this technology in your ride but don’t feel comfortable tackling the project on your own, the craftsmen at RJ that assemble world-class racing machinery can retrofit your racecar with its adjustable 4-link bracket systems in its Illinois shop.
The Joneses and the team at RJ Race Cars have built and tuned Erica Enders to three Pro Stock world championships, and Rickie is steadfast in his belief that this system has been a major advantage in their efforts.
“As the track loosens up on Sunday behind the fuel cars, the track surface starts to get beat up and we need a little extra grip. Not a huge change, just a small change…we’ll take our three bolts out, we’ll raise the top plate up an 1/8 of an inch, and that lengthens the intersect just enough to add a little bit of leverage to the housing to keep that tire planted, and keep the car hooked up,” Rickie explains.
Jones adds, “Our RJ Race Cars chassis and Quarter-Max products like this one have helped our customers win many races and championships, including the reigning world champions in NHRA Pro Mod, NHRA Pro Stock (first chassis builder to have both in same season), and PDRA Outlaw 632. As well, Steve Jackson, who won the aforementioned NHRA Pro Mod title in an RJ-built car featuring this 4-link system, set an unofficial radial-tire record last week, giving the system its most recent accolade.
