Tony Stewart has built a legacy over the course of his 40-year racing career by racing and winning behind the wheel of anything he strapped into. His trophy case has multiple USAC and NASCAR championship trophies, plus an IndyCar Series championship trophy for good measure. If all of that wasn’t enough, Stewart became a successful car owner through Stewart-Hass racing, and owns Eldora Speedway, one of the best dirt tracks in the country.
Stewart’s interest in drag racing grew when he began a relationship with NHRA Top Fuel racer Leah Pruett, whom he’s now engaged to. Stewart got a taste of what drag racing was like at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Smoke made passes in a Super Comp dragster before jumping behind the butterfly of a supercharged Top Dragster. Stewart’s trademark focus shined brightly as he worked towards mastering the art of drag racing under Hawley’s watchful eye.
Tony’s Top Fuel experience was set up months in advance as part of the pre-season testing for Don Schumacher Racing. The test session was a special one for Stewart since he was able to share the occasion with his father. Stewart went through the entire process it takes to run the car with Hawley and Pruett to make sure he was ready. After a warm-up session in the car, Stewart was ready to make his first pass in an 11,000 horsepower chariot.
Stewart’s first pass was a success and yielded a stout .851 60-foot time. The video concludes with a teaser to the next episode where Stewart continues to work towards making a full pull in Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster.
