The Doctor Is In: The Boost Doctor’s 8-Second LSX-Powered Caprice

Make no mistake, “donk” racing has been growing in popularity. Some view these vehicles as just a sideshow, but those who compete in this style of racing are very serious. A car on big wheels may not look like it could go fast, but many of these cars are cranking out well over 1,000 horsepower, and a racer that goes by the name of “Boost Doctor” brought his twin-turbo Caprice to Street Car Takeover Charlotte and dominated the Heavy Weights class.

Street Car Takeover events bring out a wild mixture of cars and trucks, and the Heavy Weights Class gives the bigger vehicles a place to play. Each vehicle in the Heavy Weights class must weigh at least 4,200-pounds and can run on any type of tire. You’ll see a mixture of cars, trucks, and even SUVs in this class with all kinds of engine combinations being represented. It makes for interesting racing that can provide some pretty crazy matchups that fans love.

“Boost Doctor” brought his 1978 Caprice known as “Luke Cage” to zMax Dragway so he could take on the Heavy Weights class. The Caprice is still street legal and rolls on 26-inch Rucci Forged wheels in the front, and 24-inch Rucci wheels in the rear that are wrapped in slicks when it’s time to race. “Luke Cage” is powered by a 427 cubic-inch LS engine that uses an LSR block as its base. The Holley intake sucks in boosted air from a pair of 72mm turbos. A Holley Terminator ECU controls the engine, while a Powerglide transmission transfers over 1,300 horsepower to the 9-inch rearend.

The team from 1320Video was on the scene at the Street Car Takeover Charlotte event and documented “Luke Cage” smashing its way through the Heavy Weights field. Thanks to a series of 8-second passes, Boost Doctor and his Caprice were able to pick up the win.
