“Street Outlaws No Prep Kings” competitor Eric Bain was injured in a high-speed crash during filming at Illinois’ Cordova International Raceway on Saturday. Bain, from Greenville, Texas, was racing his turbocharged Corvette — a car that had only just been completed in late May in time for the NPK opener — opposite the supercharged Corvette of Eric Kvilhaug in the opening round of the big-tire invitational when he got loose near mid-track and careened into the guardrail. The glancing impact sent the car spinning and tumbling to a stop in the shutdown area. Bain quickly climbed from the car under his own power, walked to the guardrail and began removing his safety equipment. Only when the adrenaline of the moment wore off did Bain realize the extent of his injuries — later determined after being transported to a nearby hospital to be a broken left ankle and toes, which he later underwent procedures to treat.
“The car did its job, the safety gear did its job. [The] Cordova crew was super fast and responsive. We got lucky today as we will race again someday. I 100-percent pushed the car beyond its limits and [I’m] currently paying the price and its a bad feeling if I’m being honest,” Bain said as he awaited surgery on his ankle Saturday afternoon. “[The] crash was avoidable and it’s something that I may look at differently forever. We were racing, we were out front and sometimes you don’t have an explanation for the events that led up to the crash but I can tell you it was driver error. Not sure where we go from here but loading up your pride and joy in a hand basket is crushing.”
