Four-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Steve Torrence will make his return to the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series tour this weekend, competing at the prestigious 71st annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Last year, Torrence finished in the runner-up position, but in 2025, he’s hungry to win it all at “The Big GO”.
Business demands with his family’s oil pipeline company and time with his growing family have kept Torrence sidelined for the last three national events, but the Texan is back behind the wheel of his CAPCO Contractors Toyota dragster and ready for one of the sport’s crown jewels.
“It’s Indy,” he said. “It’s the biggest race on the planet. How can you not be fired up when you’re competing against the best of the best? We’ve got a good race car and we’ve had a lot of (Indy) success, so we’re excited about getting after ‘em again.”
Torrence’s record at Indianapolis Raceway Park backs up that confidence. He has raced in the final round of the U.S. Nationals seven times in the past 12 years, including three of the last four. He earned Top Fuel victories in 2017 and 2021, added a Top Alcohol Dragster win in 2005, and collected three additional victories at the facility in specialty and bonus events. Among those highlights are the 2017 Traxxas Nitro Shootout, the one-off Dodge Nationals in 2020, and the first-ever NHRA All-Star Callout in 2022.
This weekend, Torrence climbs back into the same car his father, Billy Torrence, drove to a semifinal finish in Brainerd earlier this month. This is also the same car Steve piloted to victory at Bristol in May. With 56 career tour wins to his name, Torrence is confident the team has the combination to make another run on drag racing’s biggest stage.
