The opening day of competition at the Summit Racing Equipment Fling presented by Total Seal Piston Rings set the stage for a week of high-stakes bracket racing at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. Wednesday’s action, dubbed OEM Combustion Service Wednesday, gave all competitors the chance to make time runs before the first specialty shootouts began.
The day’s headline event featured 16 door cars and 16 dragsters battling for a brand-new Race Tech dragster chassis. By the third round, eight drivers remained, including Bryan Sorce, Troy Williams Jr., Logan Back, Rocky VanNote, Gary Williams, Josh Gnandt, Russell Sparks, and Courtney Grisez. Standout performances narrowed the field, with Sorce, Gary Williams, and Sparks advancing to the semifinals.
In the final, Sorce faced veteran Gary Williams. Delivering one of the sharpest packages of the night, Sorce was .001 on the tree and crossed the stripe first by just .002 seconds to secure the new Race Tech dragster chassis—his first Fling shootout victory.
The action continued with the Coltrin Door and Moulding $5,000 Shootout, open to the 16 best time-slip packages from both box and no-box competitors. Qualifying was tight, with all 16 drivers ranging from .001 to .010 total. The final paired top qualifier Donovan Williams, who had earlier posted a .001 package, against second qualifier Chris Wallin. Williams prevailed with an .008 light and a dead-on zero run, claiming the $5,000 prize and capping an impressive two-final-round evening.
The Fling continues throughout the week, with larger payouts and more shootouts on deck for racers chasing big money and prestige at Norwalk.
