Jimmy Taylor is chasing and catching drag racing history in his twin-turbo Camaro. So far, Taylor has reset the door car record in the eighth-mile twice with a pair of mind-melting passes in the 3.40s. Taylor aims to lower the record even more on his quest to be the first person to record a sub-five-second pass in the quarter-mile in a doorslammer.
Taylor grabbed people’s attention with his first attempts at the record, with some even doubting the validity of the passes since they were made at a private test session. Well, the clocks don’t lie at Maryland International Raceway, and when you’re chasing an overall record, there are no rules as to what trim the vehicle needs to be in. So, Taylor and his tuner/engine builder, Carl Stevens Jr., just kept cranking things up.
The Camaro that Taylor pilots is an absolute animal. Stevens built the car, which is powered by one of his Xtreme Racing Engines twin-turbo bullets. A pair of Precision turbos feed the beast all the boost it can handle, while a set of Atomizer fuel injectors keep the methanol flowing. Behind the engine is a Rossler Transmissions unit with a Neal Chance torque converter. A MoTeC EFI system controls the Camaro.
Taylor fired his first record-setting shot with a 3.454-second blast at 234.09 mph. Using the data from the run, Stevens loaded up the big-boy tune, and that led to Taylor running a 3.430 at 237.09 mph. That run included a .937 60-foot time, and it tripped the 330-foot clocks at 2.380 seconds. Those numbers indicate a run in the 3.30s to the eighth-mile is very possible.
Needless to say, Stevens is very excited about these numbers.
“We are incredibly proud of this run! It’s a testament to what XRE has accomplished over the past 10 years. Since day one, we’ve worked tirelessly to be the best in the business. Back in October 2015, we made history with the first-ever 230-mph 1/8-mile run. Since then, we’ve continued to push the limits—setting records and winning races across multiple organizations, including NHRA, PDRA, Mid-West Pro Mod, and NorthEast Pro Mod, just to name a few. Creating these milestones and memories alongside my best friend, Pops, has truly been a dream come true.”
So, where does Taylor go from here? Well, right now he’s content with just crushing the eighth-mile door car record. What’s on the horizon is much bigger. Taylor is locked into the World Cup Finals: Import vs. Domestic, a race that’s known for killer track prep and legendary atmospheric conditions. This event is one of the biggest stages in drag racing, and Taylor aims to be the first person to push a doorslammer into the three-second range while tickling the 300-mph zone as well.
