Chalk this one up in the “weekend to forget” files.

Outlaw Drag Radial racer Alex Vrettos, one of the heaviest hitters in a class filled with heavy hitters, made hard contact with the guardrail not once but twice on Saturday in his DMC Racing-built twin turbocharged Ford Mustang while competing in the Cecil County Dragway’s monthly Outlaw Street Car Shootout.

Vrettos, who hails from Springfield, N.J.left the line on what was an otherwise normal mid four-second lap when his brught yellow machine began to drift toward the centerline. Before Vrettos could attempt to navigate the car back into the groove, the rear end washed out and sent the ‘Stang hard into the concrete “jersey” barrier.

After the initial impact, Vrettos’ Mustang drifted away from the wall and then went left and struck the concrete once more at a lighter – albeit still very blunt – impact.

Vrettos was momentarily knocked unconscious by the glancing blow and awoke with the wind knocked out of him, as you might imagine. He was transported by ambulance for evaluation with pain in his ribs and a possible bruised lung. Considering the relatively minor injuries from such a hit, it’s a true testament to the work of Dennis MacPherson and his team at DMC Racing for the well-crafted race car they built for Alex.

According to some internet reports, Vrettos and the DMC crew have already deemed the car repairable, and we certainly look forward to seeing him back on the racetrack in short order.
