The Biggest Loser: Vrettos’ Mustang Hits The Track 200 Lbs Lighter

The world of Outlaw Drag Radial racing has become as cut throat as Pro Stock, as performances in the 4.40 range in the eighth mile and 6.70’s to the boards have become a virtual necessity to remain competitive, and thus, one can’t leave much on the table if they hope to run at the front. Team North’s Alex Vrettos’ Mustang was tipping the scales a tad on the heavy side, and recently underwent some significant work to put the car on a diet at Dennis MacPherson’s DMC racing shop in Halifax, Massachusetts.

For more photos of the work being performed on Vrettos’ radial Mustang, visit the gallery on the DMC Racing website.

Vretto’s Mustang now sports a carbon fiber deck lid, a new, lighter Schoneck Composites hood, and a one-piece removable nose. Along with those elements, the factory doors have been converted to a lift-off mount to make maintenance an easier task. As well, the chassis has been rebuilt from the firewall forward, the twin turbochargers have been re-hung with new piping – complete with the ever-popular bullhorns protruding from the fenders forward of the front wheels –  and a new fuel tank has been constructed and installed. The engine combination remains the same, but has been freshened since the last time the car saw the track.

Through these measures, nearly 250 pounds has been removed from this stout race car. Vrettos will be at Atco Raceway testing on Tuesday, and if all goes to plan, the new-and-improve right yellow ‘Stang will jump into battle at the Wold Cup Finals at MIR in two weeks, with a trip out west for t the Street Car Super Nationals a penciled-in possibility. This car was already a distinct player, and now on a level playing field with the competition, look out for Vrettos and the yellow rocket.
