Video: Pulling An 1/8th Mile Wheelstand In Under 6 Seconds

Ah, the wheelstand. In drag racing, there is no better display of power at work than taking a 2,500+ pound car and lifting its front end to the heavens in a declaration of respect for the Torque Gods. While racers generally want to avoid the time-killing nature of big wheelstands, spectators love nothing less than watching a badass wheelstand down the drag strip.

While looking for something totally unrelated, we came across this video of a monster wheelstand by Mustang driver Dale Handy, who pulled a huge wheelstand all the way down the 1/8th mile drag strip, and still came in with a sub-6 second time.

Handy, who competes in the X275 class, is in the far lane in his yellow Fox-body Mustang, nicknamed “Moneypit.” Limited to tiny 275mm radial tires, getting the front end off the ground isn’t exactly easy in these cars. But Handy makes it look easy in this video, which dates back to August of 2010. He launches the Mustang hard off the line and gets the nose skyward almost immediately.

In fact, he keeps the nose up in the air for the entire 660-foot foot run, nearly coming to Earth before he blips the throttle and keeps it airborne. The landing looked just as hard as the launch, but it’s no doubt an incredibly awesome display of the power at work here. And even with the Mustang running on just two wheels, Handy still managed a 5.85 at 116 mph, just 0.6 seconds behind his competitor.

That’s pretty damn epic if you ask us.
