Drag racing, as a hobby, isn’t the kind of thing that can be done on a whim. Sure, if you’ve got the skills and the parts, you can throw together a reasonably-fast dragster for just a few thousand dollars. But it still isn’t a cheap sport, especially if you plan on being competitive, and these days interest among young people in drag racing just doesn’t seem to be there.
Perhaps this RC racing kit from famed hobbyists Traxxas can make a difference. shown in the video above is the all-in-one RC drag racing kit called the DTS-1. The DTS-1 comes complete with a timing and scoring system that will give today’s kids a taste of high-speed victory.
Traxxas is well-known around these parts as the builders of badass electric RC car replicas of cars driven by the likes of Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. But their latest “toy” steers away from hooning and drifting towards the age-old American pastime of drag racing.
The crux of this kit is a replica of a timing tree that comes in either Sportsman or Pro flavors, depending on your skill level. At the end of the track is a timing light that gives racers their E.T. with pinpoint accuracy. You can even plug in your iPhone or iPod touch and create digital timeslips, so you can brag to your friends.
Of course all of this isn’t any good without cars to race. Thankfully, Traxxas also offers a full line of RC drag cars, including 1/8th scale Ford Mustang NHRA Funny Cars like the ones in the video above. These replica race cars even come with a tube chassis, just like the real ones.
When used with the DTS-1 drag racing kit, you can create ¼ scale drag strip racing action with up to 330 feet of range. Even if you can’t afford a full-on race car, the Traxxas DTS-1 kit will at least give you a taste of Top Fuel action.
