LSX Racer Ray Litz Prepares For X275 In 2013

The once-conservative X275 class has turned into a virtual shark tank of fast competitors since its inception, with some of the quickest and fastest cars in the class now running down in the 4.70s and even dipping into the 4.60s. Like most heads-up drag radial classes, you see a mixture of turbo, nitrous, and supercharger combinations in X275.

In 2013 you can expect one of the X275 sharks to get even quicker as Ray Litz looks to capitalize on 2012 season’s strong ending.

Litz’s path to being a perennial contender in X275 started out with his silver Pontiac Trans Am known as the “Deathray”. Sadly, at the NMCA World Finals in 2011, the Deathray had its final ride when a freak accident caused it to take a hard hit into the wall. Before Litz had even left the property a tentative deal had been struck, and a week later, Steve Turley’s former Camaro was sitting in his shop.

The new car got a fresh LSX bullet courtesy of ERL Performance filled with Wiseco pistons. To help build the power needed in X275, Ray went with a set of All-Pro cylinder heads and intake. Moran fuel injectors feed the motor lots of C16, and to help keep things cool under the hood, Design Engineering provided wraps for all the hot parts.

Shearer Fabrication finished off the turbo kit and other odds and ends, and a Rossler Powerglide transmission takes care of the shifting duties in the Camaro. All of that power would go to waste without a solid suspension, and Midwest Chassis and Performance stepped up to provide a top-level suspension setup. Patrick Barnhill from PTP Racing helped get the tune right and tight.

After a slightly longer than expected build, the car made a wild debut at the Holley LS Fest. The video provided by Ray shows what happened after he decided to turn the wick up on the LSX-powered monster. Next up for Litz was a stop at the Lingenfelter Nationals, where he was runner-up to Mark Carlyle. At the Import vs. Domestic World Cup in Maryland, Litz ran his best elapsed time to date, as he coaxed his Camaro to a 7.44 at 192 mph to become the quickest 1/4-mile turbo car in X275 trim. A full season of racing kicks off at Lights Out 4 when Litz will travel to South Georgia to test his skills against the best in the country.
