This rendering of Bucky Austin’s new look 1977 Firebird Nostalgia Funny Car rolled across our desk this afternoon. The Bucky’s Mufflers, Brakes, and Radiators flopper based out of Washington state will once again be driven by former Northwest Top Alcohol Dragster standout Mark Hentges, who wheeled Austin’s ’78 Plymouth Arrow bodied machine in 2010. The new Firebird body features a sleek paint scheme designed by none other than famed drag racing artist Kenny Youngblood, with the iconic “Blood Did It” slogan adorning the rear rocker panel. The lettering on the sides is completed in some timeless gold flake to give the car some additional nostalgia flavor. We don’t see ‘blood design paint schemes very often, but this may have been one he just couldn’t pass up.
Last season, With Hentges behind the wheel and Austin tuning, the pair campaigned the popular Plymouth nitro burner at some of the West coast’s major events along with the NHRA’s Hot Rod Heritage Series, where they finished third in the season points chase behind newcomer Leah Pruett-LeDuc and Tim Boychuck. At the Nightfire Nationals in Boise, Idaho, Hentges came up just short in an incredible final round matchup with Boychuk, where a 5.77 at a booming 247.93 MPH pass lagged just behind a holeshot-aided 5.81.
Austin himself is among drag racing’s elite as a driver, with 42 wins in Division 6 competition and 18 elsewhere to go along with 15 national event wins. And for those that are curious, he’s also the uncle of former Top Alcohol Funny Car champ and Top Fuel sensation Pat Austin.
