For a long time, Michigan resident Tim Huspen was the champion of the blow-through carburetor, but his new combination will feature a pair of turbochargers and a BigStuff3 engine management system. “We’ve made some big changes on the car. We’re still going to be running Outlaw Drag Radial/Outlaw 275, depending on what the rules are. It’s still going to be the same basic 400 cubic inch small-block Ford engine combination, and we’ve got a pair of BorgWarner S500 88mm turbochargers on the car. I’m real happy about the partnership with BorgWarner,” says Huspen.
Huspen had a lot of success with the carburetor, and still feels like they’re a viable power solution in racing, but at this point in time his combo will be fuel injected. With the plans to take his setup the next level, the fuel injection seemed like the next step to take. “In no way, shape, or form, though, am I saying that the carburetor doesn’t work, because I’m still helping people every day that are going quicker with the carb than I was. I raced for 13 years with the carburetor,” he explains.
With the change to the new engine combination, Huspen felt it was time to update the rest of the car to match. His chassis had been updated by Team Z Motorsports a few years back and carries a 25.2/25.3/25.1 SFI certification, but the front half of the car was in need of a change. Team Z installed one of their Outlaw K-member packages, which will permit Huspen to pull the oil pan if necessary without removing any of the undercarriage components, and Team Z also built up the rest of the hot and cold sides of the turbo system.
Huspen has relied on Jamey Swanson at Majerus Garage for years to help get his engine combination up to par, and a brand-new bullet will be assembled in anticipation of 4.40 eighth-mile times. The wiring in Tim’s machine will be redone by Tom Frayer at High Voltage Automotive, while he’ll still be running the tried-and-true Powerglide from Hutch’s Transmission Service in Canada, and a torque converter from Cameron’s Torque Converter Services in South Carolina.
A brand-new wrap design (as you can see above) was designed up by GregZ Designs, and the rest of the car will be repainted by Tim’s crewmember Rick in the familiar Tangelo Orange hue Huspen’s been running for years. In conjunction with Team Z, Motor City Solutions popped a brand-new ’86 Mustang front end out of the mold for Huspen – he’s the first guy anywhere to have one. He’s also got a set of MCS doors, hood, and decklid.
Tim’s looking for an early 2014 debut with the car, and if past performance is any indicator of future performance, Tim Huspen will be one to watch in the Outlaw Drag Radial ranks with this new combination.
