The team at Fuelab takes great pride in its rank as one of the industry leaders in high performance fuel system components, offering a range of fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulators, filters, and accessories for the performance, race, and diesel markets, with a core emphasis on digital fuel delivery using modern technology. Of course, a company like Fuelab can’t push the envelope and produce cutting edge products without top notch engineering, design, manufacturing, and of course, testing.
Like all performance manufacturers, Fuelab puts all of its products, be they concepts, current production, or customers rebuilds, thought rigorous testing to ensure that each and every part is up to their quality standards before ever going out the door, and to accomplish this, the Litchfield, Ill. company utilizes an automated test stand and computer software developed in-house by engineer Rob Scharfenburg. The stand, similar in design to other fuel pump test stands that we’ve seen, is all contained within a single, rather compact and mobile unit.
In the video shown here, Fuelab delivers a glimpse at their test stand, how the pumps are tested, the criteria that the engineers look at, and what information is provided with the pump certification with each pump that’s tested (and Fuelab does indeed test every pump).
While appearing rather complex on the surface, Fuelab’s test stand is a relatively simplistic setup, using AN fuel lines, industrial sensors, and solenoid valves on the entirely custom-built stand. As you can surmise, Fuelab uses all of their own parts for the operation, including filters and regulators.
The operation of the stand is really a basic view of what’s going on inside a vehicle’s fuel system, just on a smaller scale. Two Fuelab pumps feed the test stand, which then operates the pump that’s being tested. This pressurizes the inlet side of the pump with fuel to give a testing range of 0-100 psi. We’ll let the video and its narrator explain the steps in the testing phase to you in greater detail, but if you’ve never had the unique opportunity to visit a fuel pump manufacturing facility or a similar operation, you’ll certainly want to check this video out, as it’s very cool stuff to both see and hear what goes on in a fuel system that you can’t normally experience when in a vehicle.
