On today’s Craiglist find, we delved deep into Sin City to see what we could find, and we came up with a winner: a red, white, and blue Barracuda (CL number 4087418289)Â formerly driven by none other than Ronnie Sox, of Sox and Martin fame.
But even aside from its ownership, the car is special for another reason: its code. That code happens to be B029, which designates it as 1 of 50 factory-made monsters meant for elite teams like the aforementioned Sox and Martin.
A B029 code gave the pony car some fantastic advantages when it came to power enhancements and weight savings. The venerable 426 HEMI was installed, complete with two Holley 4160 carbs and was attached to a sturdy A833 four-speed transmission with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter.
As for the construction of the car, engineers made the car use the regular steel bodies, but gutted them of insulation and weather stripping. The front was molded from fiberglass (complete with a hood scoop), and the whole of the car was painted black.
The typical inside conversions to these racing models were made as well: black upholstery and dashboard sans the radio and air conditioner, and the rear seat replaced by a cardboard panel. Lightweight glass was fitted and, naturally, the battery made to sit in the trunk. Alterations to the chassis gave the car Super Stock rear springs and shocks to match, completing the package.
Add to all this the legend that was Ronnie Sox and his long winning history with running killer Plymouths on the NHRA circuit, and you’ve got a hell of a car on your hands. Sox’s record of racing from 1965-72 included a five-year winning streak starting in 1967, as well as helping to sell the Plymouth name through performance clinics at various dealerships.
Sox once stated that this car was the most favorite of any that he ever raced. Given the history and legend it helped to create, it’s easy to see why. Perhaps such a legend is enough to make someone want to part with a quarter of a million dollars; only time will tell.
